Kiwis have been spending with their mobile phones rather than their wallets, according to the latest figures which reveal that just over 20% of all payment transactions in 2018 used contactless technology.
The data reflects the changing attitudes of New Zealanders who have been slower on the uptake of contactless payment technology than some of our international counterparts such as China where mobile payments, including Ali Pay and WeChat pay, have surged to $9 trillion a year.
While New Zealand has seen a steady increase in the total use of contactless payment methods, the launch of the Ingenico Telium Tetra range offers Kiwi businesses an opportunity to capitalise on the Chinese visitor market, who spends more than $1.5 billion in New Zealand every year.
“More than 90% of Chinese visitors said they would be more likely to make a purchase if they could do it using a Chinese mobile payment option. Our latest range of terminals creates new possibilities for Kiwi merchants to access these customers who prefer to use popular Chinese payment systems over traditional payments,” says Darren Parker, Managing Director of Skyzer Technologies.
The Ingenico Telium Tetra range consists of three series – Move, Desk and Lane. They are designed for modern payment methods using contactless NFC, QR code and mobile wallets, as well as traditional electronic chip and magnetic stripe readers and can integrate seamlessly with other business systems.
“Our aim at Skyzer is to help people get on with business, while we take care of the payments process,” says Parker.
“The new Ingenico Telium Tetra range does exactly that and gives merchants the assurance that their payments system is ready to make the most of all commercial opportunities.”
